my soundwave project

Postby adam-X on Wed Sep 26, 2007 10:07 pm

I only have one pic for now but hopefully will have more by this weekend.

I have been working on it about 4 weeks just on weekends a few hours a day. Im making this on a budget so far I have only spent, abou 35 bucks.
The helmet is not complete its just the basic outside of soundwaves head as of now, im working on the front of the head and the brow and detail, which I hope to have done this week end.
The body and legs are made out of polysterene which is just insulationboard I bought at home depot. My visor will be saftey glasses I painted with clear coat red.
I have plexiglass in the chest that I picked up at a local hardware store for 6 dollars.
I think so far its not to shabby for just under 35 bucks.
And yes their will be detail added before im done.

this is the only pic I have for now.

im going to go over the yellow around his chest with something more solid so there is no seems. And fix the angles up a bit
EDIT:
materials im using
polystyrene, foam board, cardboard, plastic, plexiglass, posteboard, hott glue and tape

Nice! That's looking pretty good so far. How's that polystyrene work out? Do you put anything on the outside of it or do you paint it? I've never worked with it, but I'm curious. I like the idea of using the clear red paint, too. It took me over an hour to saw out the chunk I used.

My Wife Genesee's from Austin - We were just down there a year ago (During 104 degree weather - I'm from Wisconsin - I'm just not used to that).

man , the weather here sucks!
anyway, I just use a xacto knife and a sheetrock knife I picked up at wal-mart for 96cents to cut the shapes out, I use a straight edge to draw the lines and then just cut em out like butter. Im also toying around with a dremel. FRom what I read your not supose to apply paint to the insulation board because paint eats foam, so I glued(acid free glue!) posterboared on it for now and painted using krylon the best spray paint imo. since im down to only a month before halloween, the posterboard is just a quik fix. however it looks fairly nice and its dirt cheap 33 cents at wal-mart, however I have considered fiberglassing the body after halloween.

Looks great!

What are you doing for air-holes? I know I get bad fogging problems on the small eye-holes. It may be a lot better for the Soundwave visor.

One of the problems with the costumes are the temperature changes. Both the Wife and I have gotten sick from being super hot to going outside in the cold. But that was also after 3 nights in a row. It does feel good to go outside and cool down though.

Hmm, I wonder if there's a bandwidth issue.
I'm looking forward to seeing the new pics. Are you going to be ready by the end of October?

Sweet, the more the better!
Make sure to bring Robot Wranglers! They keep you from getting knocked over. Plus it gets hot so you'll need someone to carry a towel and help you pick up stuff. When we had all three out we had 4 or 5 helpers, and when we were down to 2 it wasn't enough.

a small update of my progress, test fiting today all I need to make now are the arms and thighs and my cannon on my shoulder, I need to finish painting, adding detail and a lil tweaking here and there. O and i need to finish the inside of the helmet that way it fits correctly as you can see fitment of the helmet is not great here because it literaly just on my head, it should look better once i make it fit a lil more snug that way my visor will look better.
Edit: sorry for crappy camera phone pics

forgot to say the knees will be lowered a bit that way I can have a thigh lol
The prob was I origanlly made the legs with a 6inch base in the feet made of 1x6 but found it to dangerous to walk around in so I removed them, due to not being able to see my feet. So I will be normal height its much easier to get around like this. so the legs will be adjusted.
